Master Programme

Academic degree: Master of Arts (MA)

Do you want to better understand how images and visual representations work? In the Master’s programme Visual Culture, you develop a trained eye for all things figurative. You deal with a multifaceted world of images and deal with topics from the past and present of the arts and visual popular culture. The focus is on: image and public (e.g. exhibitions, museums, monuments, festivals, etc.), transcultural image communication (e.g. regional and global cultural education) and visual documentary and fictional design practices (e.g. film, photography and the Internet).

During your studies, you will acquire a variety of theoretical, methodological and practical skills for analysis and evaluation. You will engage intensively and critically with various aspects of visual art and visual pop culture, learning to understand and classify the meaning and reception of these art forms in the context of the ever-changing media and transcultural landscape. Your degree will enable you to analyse the role and impact of visual artefacts in a globalised world and to interpret their influence on society.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, great emphasis is placed on practical work. You are given the opportunity, for example to implement your own documentary and fictional film and photo projects technically and conceptually as well as to develop exhibition concepts and curatorial skills. These hands-on experiences prepare you for the diverse demands of professional life and enable you to implement your creative ideas professionally.

The interdisciplinary course of study allows you to explore a wide range of fields of activity after graduation. You can work in arts and culture enterprises, cultural journalism, press and public relations as well as in the creative industry. Numerous doors are also open to you in the field of film and television. This diversity of possible fields of activity offers you the opportunity to successfully apply and develop your acquired knowledge and skills in various industries.
